Welcome to HorseTalk with Dakota

02.18.09

Dakota Lee welcomes new HorseTalk viewers to her latest video blogs.

In each episode of HorseTalk, Dakota teaches viewers all the things they’ve ever wanted to know about horses, and some of the things they didn’t.

At age 13, this young author published her first book, Flash of Freedom, which spawned this video diary. She encourages all viewers to post questions and comments on her blog. This year, Dakota will be traveling to schools, sharing her book and teaching students how to live their dream no matter their age.

Hi Dakota, just wanted you to know I read “Flash of Freedom” last night. It was a very enjoyable read. Very impressed and congratulations on a job well done! Oh, and by the way, when is the next episode coming out??

Thanks so much for commenting. Its great that you liked my book, I love it whenever I get feedback like that. The next episode should be coming out soon. The thing is that the rain doesn’t make a good background, and we’ve been busy with selling my book. You know, keeping track of it all. Once things are more under control it will be easier to get an episode of HorseTalk out every Sunday and Wednesday

Thanks so much to Rebecca and Nicole for commenting!

Rebecca- Yay! I’m so glad you like them, and we will try to make a video twice a week

Nicole- Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you for volunteering your pony, it really helped us out. And it would have been such a disappointment if nobody rode a horse.
As for being good on camera, practice at it really helps ;)

Hi Jaelyn! (That’s a really cool name) Everyone there was terrific too. Although I have to say that I was really scared to talk in front of you. But with practice I’m getting better. And thank you for wishing because it worked. I had a lot of fun on my horse today!

Hey Dakota! I think you are inspiring many people to become young authors! My sister wants to become an author now and she’s only 8! Also, it was so great to see you the other day.

    ~Kyle

P.S. It seems like just yesteraday you were in Mrs. Barksdale’s class writing ‘Flash of Freedom’ in your black and white journal :)

  10. Cowgirlboots says on :

Thanks Kyle Werner and Ellie for commenting.

Kyle Werner- Yeah, It was so cool seeing you at my book signing too! Encourage your sister, the younger she is the more impact she can have. And you too, well, it doesn’t have to be writing, but anything that you love doing!
Did you know that your dedicated in the book? You are one of the people who “know who you are”

Ellie- That’s pretty cool that you know Skylar and you saw me talk at the same time. Sonny-D and I are doing great, although he really needs a bath. It’s shedding season, ya know?
Your horse’s name makes me want to meet him :)
    -Dakota

  11. Kyle Werner says on :

Thanks for the dedication ;) Yeah my sister’s really into writing! Thank you and I will stick with what I love to do (swimming). Anyway, how’s your life out of writing? How is Salem?

  12. Alie James says on :

About 40 years (yes, really) ago I had a horse named Daubin. Even today, I count the time I spent with him as some of my most “favorite days.” Like you, I’m a self-publishing author, and one of my books (Secrets to Healthy Aging & Ageless Beauty) relates my adventures with Daubin to the gift of freedom. So from one author to the next, I wish you great success!

  13. Kyle Werner says on :

    Dakota,
Let me just say: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I’m about halfway through ‘Flash of Freedom’ and I just can’t put it down. I haven’t had a read like ‘Flash of Freedom’ in…. well, a long time. Also, say I were to start writing a book. Where do I start?

    Thanks,

    ~Kyle

Thanks to Elora Galluzzo (3 times over), Alie James, and Kyle Werner (2 times over)

Elora- Don’t ever worry about commenting too much, I love it! That’s fantastic that you’ve already written books, most people can’t even take the time to do that.
And the fact that your going to have a horse ranch one day, holy cow that is my dream too! Maybe we can help each other when we get older and actually have the property with the ranches on it. If you want to look, I told a bunch about it on http://www.DakotaLee.com in the About Me section.
Dream big, then dream bigger, then even bigger. I keep doing that. God’s call on my life is huge, but He can only do what I can think big enough for. The amazing thing is that he always wants me to keep dreaming bigger!
No, no one is too old to ride!!! There are tons of people who start riding when they way older than 13. One thing I know that some barns do for the money issue is that they have you work at their stable ground to get a free lesson, or at least a discounted one. This is a great way to do it not only for $ but you learn a lot about horses. Riding is one thing, but if you are going to be into horses then learning about horse care is super important. And when you work on the ground, not just in the saddle it really opens up an entirely new world to you. Sometimes it feels like riding is only the bonus to all the other stuff you have to do with them.
As for reading Flash of Freedom to Sonny-D, no. He would probably dose off anyway.

Alie James- Yes, horses are the best way to spend your time. I’m going to try hard to never stop riding, and then the rest of my life will be my favorite days! Thank you for the wish; it’s working. Which self publisher did you use? I used IUniverse.

Kyle Werner- Salem is a pretty cool school. My life of writing is turning out wonderfully! I’m going to talk to a bunch of fourth and fifth graders tommarrow (or at the time I’m replying, it turns out this morning. But hey, I’m tracked out) at this elementary school like an hour away. ZZZ’s on the way for sure.
I’m really glad you like reading Flash of Freedom. I know my book backwards and forwards, so it takes comments like yours to show me again how good my book is to a new reader.
For every author writing a book is different. But if it was me in your shoes I would say read other books. That way you can generate ideas on what type of book you want to write, you know, see what generes you like, what characters are the coolest to you, and where the best place to be is. Then get a good note book, or laptop to write in!

    Dakota-
my horse is a sweet heart. he can show his but when he gets near Emmy, my sister’s horse. my horse needs a bath too. i am going to miss him because i am leaving for a cruise tomorrow. i will be gone for 10 days.

  16. Kyle Werner says on :

    Dakota,
I totally know how you feel! I had to get up early yesterday morning for a piano lesson. UGH! It was so hard! Track-out definitely shouldn’t be a time of getting up early. It just isn’t right. Anyway, I’m glad that Salem’s going well. I’m still Lufkin and it’s like every other middle schooler’s life. You wake up, you sit through boring classes, you come home, you do homework and you go to bed. Pretty boring. It’s a shame that our fifth grade class had to get split up like that!! Some kids went to Salem, some to Lufkin and some to other places.
Also, I love to read! It’s like my favorite thing to do and I’ve kind of taken interest into the fantasy (Harry Potter kind of) genre. It seems the most entertaining and the enjoyable for me. And who knows, some day you might see a book with my name in the authors place. :) Oh ya one more thing. Is Tara’s life at school and with Freedom based on any of your experiences at school or with Sonny D? Or is it just totally fiction. Thanks.
    ~ Kyle

P.S. If you answer my question about Tara don’t spoil anything. I’m only on page 60.

    Hi dakota lee

  18. Tyler says on :

    What are you doing?

  19. ashley says on :

hi Dakota your book is awesome

  20. Cowgirlboots says on :

Thanks Ellie, Kyle, Tyler and Ashley for commenting

Ellie- I’m so sorry! Not that you have to go on a cruise (your gonna love it) but that you have to leave your horse. I get sad whenever I miss just one day of not seeing my horse. Ten days is really hard for me.

Kyle- Piano lessons sound rough. But I bet your really good at it by now. I’ve never read Harry Potter, why do you like it?
Tara’s school life is related to mine only in the way that she goes to a school, but honestly nothing else. Characters come to me really easily. I find it as one of my strong points. A weak point in my writing is when I get to a part where all that needs to happen is for time to pass. I find it like waiting for the exciting stuff. One time I stopped writing for months because I found summarizing the time that was passing so boring. And I was a little unfocused, but it’s good now!

Tyler- Hi back to you, and I have just gotten back from a trip to New York City. Thats why I’ve been so late on commenting. I usually would never leave people hanging like that, I promise! And actually we got some really good HorseTalk episodes filmed, I’m really excited for them to be posted. Stay alert for them!

Ashley- Woohoo! Thanks for reading it, and I’m so happy my book is awesome.
    -Dakota

  21. Kyle Werner says on :

I like Harry Potter because it has a lot of action and you always find yourself wanting to know the answer to another question. Summarizing time without action sounds really hard and it would probably be hard for me as well. Oh yeah! How was NYC? I love that place. I was actually born in New York City and lived in the suburbs for about 2 years or so.

    ~Kyle

  22. Cowgirlboots says on :

    Thanks for commenting Kyle,
That sounds good. I’m sure “Harry Potter’ are some really well written books. But I saw one part of a movie, and I don’t need that stuff in my system.
Honestly, summarizing isn’t that hard. I’m the one who makes it hard! If I had just kept writing, then Flash of Freedom probably would have been out months ago. Oh well; nothing I can do about it now, right?
NYC was amazing. Of course, we were only given tours of the good stuff. The horses there pretty much astounded me! You’ll see why in the video coming up. My cousin lives there, and we got to see him. He is so much fun, and he was happy that his ticket to ‘Top of the Rock’ was free. The view there, well, amazed me. No other word for it. But how anyone could live in that city is beyond me!
    -Dakota

  23. Kyle Werner says on :

My aunt actually lives in NYC. And it definitely is wild! So other than NYC, how are you enjoying your track-out?

    ~Kyle

  24. Cowgirlboots says on :

Thank you again for commenting Kyle, (not that it’s a bad thing)
I am really enjoying my track out. Each day I can go to the barn, stay up late (If I want to), not have to be stressed about school, and every now and then go talk to a classroom! In fact, I am going to share with a third grade class over at our old elementary school. This is the youngest I’ve ever talked to. And before any time I go and talk my nerves try to flare up. I’m learning that I can just push them away and really enjoy myself. I get better each time I give my little talk.
